The recording of an audiobook necessitates a highly controlled environment, typically a soundproof booth within a recording studio. Given the voice-centric nature of the final product, it’s crucial to eliminate any potential background noise. To achieve this, we utilize facilities explicitly designed for voice recording, offering the utmost in quiet and soundproofing.

At LenseUp, we prioritize a seamless recording process. To avoid disruptions such as page turns or paper rustling, we opt for digital formats, presenting the book text on devices like tablets or iPads. This practice not only promotes a smooth recording session but also reduces the post-production workload for our audio engineers.

2. The Recording Process: An Art and a Science

Our voice actors typically record the book in segments, often chapter by chapter, with scheduled breaks. Depending on the text length and narrator’s pace, a single chapter can take roughly an hour to record. We maintain a consistent tone and style by recording chapters in one go. Should a mistake occur, the narrator resumes from the preceding sentence while the recording continues, with the audio engineer marking the error for later correction.

Post-recording, the audio is sent for editing, accompanied by any notes from the director to guide the audio engineer’s work.

3. Audio Editing and Cleanup

The production editing stage is where we assemble, refine, and polish your audio, ensuring a clear and immersive listening experience. Our audio engineers utilize advanced software tools and their expertise to address potential audio issues such as:

These specifications include uniform sound, opening and closing credits, mono or stereo files, and a retail audio sample. Each file should contain one chapter with a few seconds of room tone at the start and end, and the narrator must state the chapter or section’s name at the outset. If a chapter exceeds 120 minutes, it must be split into two audio files and labeled accordingly.

Once the audio files are edited, we commence proofing to ensure there are no errors.

5. Proofing Process: Listening with a Critical Ear

Audiobook proofing is a meticulous process that involves critically and thoroughly listening to the edited audiobook, ideally through headphones to mimic the listener’s experience. This review is conducted chapter by chapter, with comments added as necessary or approval granted for mastering. On average, proofing requires about 1.5 hours per finished hour of the audiobook.

During proofing, we listen for repeated phrases, consistent narration, erroneous sounds, mispronunciations, gaps in sections, editing mistakes, and page-turn sounds.

6. The Mastering Stage: The Final Touch

After the audio editing and proofing stages are complete, the audiobook enters the mastering stage. Here, all audio files are assembled, and the audio is mastered to meet the required specifications of the publishing service. This process involves ensuring a uniform tone, consistent level per file, sample rate conversion, fixing problematic frequencies, and adding required metadata and ISRC codes.
